Diabetes diet plan
Diabetes diet plan for steadier blood sugar
A diabetes diet plan aims for steady blood sugar: balanced meals with the right portion of carbohydrate, enough protein and fibre, and regular meal timing. Praksha, a Certified Diabetes Educator, builds a daily plan around your HbA1c, medication and routine, and adjusts it as your readings change.
Who this is for
- You have type 2 diabetes and want better HbA1c
- You are pre-diabetic and want to prevent progression
- You are confused about what you can and cannot eat
What your plan focuses on
Carbohydrate portions that work for you
Not zero carbohydrate. The right type, amount and timing across the day.
Fibre and protein in every meal
To slow the rise in blood sugar after eating.
Your readings guide the plan
Fasting and post-meal readings and HbA1c shape the next changes.
Indian meals, adapted
Roti, rice, idli, dosa and dal, adjusted instead of removed.
Food guidance
Usually emphasised
- Dals, beans and sprouts
- Vegetables, especially non-starchy ones
- Whole grains and millets in measured portions
- Curd, buttermilk, nuts and seeds
Usually limited
- Sweets, sugary drinks and fruit juice
- Large portions of white rice and refined flour
- Deep-fried snacks
- Long gaps between meals followed by heavy meals
This is general guidance. Your own plan is personalised to your reports, medication and food preferences.
What we track
- Fasting and post-meal glucose
- HbA1c
- Weight and waist
- Cholesterol and kidney markers as advised by your doctor
Please note
Never change or stop diabetes medication on your own. Your plan is designed to work alongside your doctor’s advice, and low blood sugar episodes should be reported to your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can diabetics eat rice?
Yes, in controlled portions eaten together with dal, vegetables and protein. The type and the portion size matter more than avoiding rice completely.
Can diet reverse type 2 diabetes?
Diet can improve blood sugar control considerably, and some people reduce medication under their doctor’s guidance. We do not promise a cure.
I am pre-diabetic. Do I need a plan?
A plan at the pre-diabetes stage is one of the best ways to prevent progression to type 2 diabetes.
Will my plan change with my sugar readings?
Yes. You share your readings and Praksha adjusts the plan as they improve or change.
